The Case Study Alpine Series by Jay Novak for Modernica

In any type of design, original thought literally comes to life with a little inspiration. Take a New York City moment, a bus stop in a snowstorm, or maybe a garage sale tennis racket and poof! You’ve got an award-winning novel, a breakthrough computer program, or in Jay Novak‘s case, the matching Case Study Alpine Bed and Case Study Alpine Bed Side Table he designed in 2010 for Modernica.

If you can’t guess by looking at the laminated hardwood furnishings, Novak is rumored to have found his inspiration for this smooth design from “a respect and appreciation of the traditional craftsmanship of vintage-sporting equipment; such as bentwood tennis rackets and wooden skis”. But not tennis rackets alone helped this award-winning bed design. As evidence would show, the modernist mid-century case study homes of California appear in its subtle, solid structure.

As you can see, the Case Study Alpine Bed Side Table matches the curved silhouette of the bed frame. Using twenty-two layers of laminated hardwoods with the top and bottom veneer consisting of a rich North American walnut, the Case Study Alpine Series is featured as a new addition to the line-up at DWR. As the Modernica website mentions of the bed, “Designer Jay Novak was awarded a federal design patent for the Case Study Alpine Bed, establishing the bentwood frame as distinctly different. The official patent referenced Italian Designer Vico Magistretti’s work and was reviewed by Primary Examiner Janice Seeger, who also considered Vico’s patent back in 1993.”

Like the vintage look of the Case Study Alpine Bed and Table, Modernica also speaks to the recent past. A twenty year-old company founded in the center of Los Angeles, they’ve long been a handbuilt “Made in the USA” modern furnishing manufacturer with an enormous following around the globe.
