A Salone 2011 Preview: Crane Lamp by Benjamin Hubert for Örsjö

Poor task lighting – as a whole, they have one of those funny names that attempts to dictate what you should be doing in its glow: completing a task. God forbid you were to peruse the coolest task lights while lying on your chaise doing absolutely nothing. A lamp like the new Crane by Benjamin Hubert for Örsjö possesses the innate qualities of an industrial, workaholic table lamp but represents the posterity of the youthful task lamp generation with its lean, sleek design.

Crane Lamp. Designed by Benjamin Hubert for Örsjö.

As Abitare states about the Crane – which will be shown at Salone 2011 – it is inspired by “industrial engineered metal structures and equipment,” and uses a set of “high power LEDs shrouded in an industrial, perforated aluminum casing to create a tube that is uninterrupted by openings.” Finished with a simple clamp base that works in unison with a horizontal arm that articulates the height and rotates fluidly, the quality of the materials and detailing of the adjustment components make this a clear addition to the gamut of Örsjö products.

Hubert is as hip and modern as the furniture and lighting he creates. Born in late 1984, don’t let his age fool you. This Elle Decoration International Design Awards (or EDIDA) Young Designer of the Year 2010 has won a slough of honors between just 2009 and 2010: Elle Decoration Awards France – Young Designer of the year 2009, British Design Awards with Elle Decoration – Design of the year 2009, 100% Design Blueprint Award – Best New Product 2009, and Home and Garden Design Classic – Young Designer of the Year 2010, among others.

Like the Steven Haulenbeek of the UK, the up-and-coming designs of Hubert and Örsjö will set the stage for the tasks – and pure enjoyment – that come with the design of 2011.
