Upcycled Doily Lamp by reMade USA
Sadly, it’s been a while since I’ve written about a product from Brook What To Do When Your Ex Girlfriend Is Dating Your Friend lyn, NY. Sometimes I forget to go back and see what’s happening in Red Hook or Dumbo or anywhere else in the-city-within-the-city (Did you know that Brooklyn was its own city until 1898?). Periodically, my attention should be focused there, on the most populous of the five boroughs—perhaps especially now that residents are battling massive amounts of snow. Much like the intricate patterns of snowflakes, old crochet doilies feature bilateral symmetry and delicate latticework.
Upcycled Doily Lamp. Designed by reMade USA.
Handmade in Brooklyn by Shannon South
Founder of reMade USA, Shannon South has been “collecting vintage crochet doilies for several months” in an attempt to create an upcycled lampshade. Born of grandmothers’ handiwork, South’s pendant lamp is a globe of lace displaying flowers and leaves, whorls and circles. Best of all is the effect of the light shinning through the needlework wonders that compose this prototype: “The shadows that it creates on the ceiling and walls are just gorgeous.”
I like the new spin on an old (if not staid) classic. Those crochet doilies have seen their day—sitting beneath Fenton candy dishes on your grandmother’s coffee table and placed beneath porcelain dolls in your great aunt’s china cabinet. I sincerely had my doubts about whether this item could be repurposed into something interesting, but South has succeeded. Much like her other handcrafted creations, the pendant lamp prototype stresses her ability to reinvent “used materials to make one-of-a-kind accessories.” If you like the planetary doily lampshade, email Shannon South for more information.
