“This collaboration is the premise for a joint Cappellini and Walt Disney Signature stylistic commitment” says Giulio Cappellini of his company’s latest endeavor with Walt Disney Signature and Dror in creating the TRON Armchair. Excitedly, he adds that it is exciting since it is “combining Cappellini’s strong inclination for innovation with the magical creativity of Disney”.

Exciting indeed, Mr. Cappellini. Adults and children alike get a kick out of combining new and classic forces. In a way, this collaboration reminds me of space travel – like a shuttle taking off into new, atmospheric territories with the grand expectation of incredible results. There is no doubt designer Michael Dror felt the weight of “imagined” pressure on his shoulders to be honored with designing a chair that measures up.

If you’re like me, you took a moment to envision what that might feel like, living vicariously through his shaking boots. But then you remember one important factor… this is Dror we’re talking about. You know, the designer who articulates the complex meaning of objects in the simplest of ways, expressing himself metaphorically and literally with designs that have done nothing but win awards around the world.

The TRON Armchair uses its angles and rock-like textures to show that you can feel as though you’re sitting “off the grid” from day to day reality. They are constructed of composite materials that consist of impregnated fiberglass with a polyester resin. Together, they are processed with manual layering and will be produced as a limited-edition series that follow the Milano Design Village launch of the Cappellini and Disney collaboration earlier this year. One TRON Armchair prototype (of the many different textual surfaces that are to come) will be making its official debut at the Milano International Furniture Fair in April of 2011.

The story of TRON rushes in as soon as you experience the chair’s spirited asymmetry  – almost as if channeling the rebellious nature of Sam Flynn or the fearless warrior, Quorra, who takes him into the digital world to find his father.
