Nightstands are to a bed like pockets are to a pair of pants: You don’t notice their convenience until they’re missing. And we’ve all stayed somewhere – a sparse guest bedroom typically – where you realize there is no where to set your phone, book, laptop, or jewelry after the day is done. Standing out from your flat wall, this Coco Moon oval-shaped nightstand is the double whammy, two-edged sword to modern nightstands. It comes in a brilliant white and has a contemporary shape to it that is clean and dramatic. Rossetto, an Italian company, specializes in day and night series of furniture that fits in every room. Besides the 2-drawer version (shown here), they also make a 4-drawer version for the loftier bed frames; both versions are designed to match their Coco Moon bed.

2. Cubic

I can’t get over the cool factor of the Cubic nightstand. With your choice of an open or closed back and the option for a custom textile, it’s looks great from every angle. Inside the outer rectangle there is an exposed shelf at the top and a small cube at the base. Although it doesn’t contain much privacy, its structure creates an easily accessible interior perfect for literature. Cubic is built by hand with sustainable Canadian Birch Hardwood Ply over a period of four weeks by a single SIDD craftsman in Ottawa. It comes with a triple gloss topcoat and satin nickel hardware to really make it shine.

3. Series 11

Described as an “elegant and refined approach” to nightstands, the Series 11 stands out with its “thin hardwood edges and thoughtful proportions”. Blu Dot has made this piece in a deep, dark wood that can be paired with black or brown shades, and perfectly suits a colorful lamp for dramatic color contrasting. With subtle door pulls and a stainless steel base, the Series 11 has smooth gliding drawers. In addition to the graphite on oak coloring (shown) it is also available in a rift-sawn white oak.

4. Natural Vermont

From a handmade, hardwood furniture company in Vermont that is crafted from sustainably-harvested wood with natural and non-toxic finishes, the Natural Vermont nightstand by Patti Smith looks like something right out of a modern prairie home. In natural cherry, natural oak, natural maple, or natural walnut (for $112 more), the four-legged bedside table has slatted sides and a stout, solid shape. Beautiful and built-to-order, this Patti Smith design – and the other complimentary pieces – can be customized to your specifications.

5. Z Bedside Table

Most recently, the Z Bedside Table made a cameo on the set of Sex and the City 2 (in Carrie and Big’s bedroom). Although the movie created quite the controversy in the Middle East, the Z Bedside Table has been highly-acclaimed for its interesting “twist”. Based on their award-winning ‘Z’ line – that all feature a spun, or twisted, facet leg and a hidden, bevelled drawer – Hellman-Chang is available in designer showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dania, Dallas, and Houston. Three standard sizes can be hand-made to order from solid wood right in the Hellman-Chang studio in New York.

Based on what they say is a “classic design”, the Linear Tier table by InModern is constructed from just five pieces of FSC Certified SmartWood® and uses a 100% non-toxic, water-based stain that comes in either 'cocoa' and 'slate'. It can be assembled in minutes with no tools, and with the tiered platforms, offers you plenty of ways to separate your night and morning necessities.

7. Essex

Flexing the Williams-Sonoma quality, the Essex is streamlined but warm and inviting. With plenty of room for combination storage – with one drawer and open shelving – the Essex is, as they state, “solidly built with double-dowel construction and hardwood framing”. It is “expertly veneered” with solid maple wood and is completed by hand in a luxurious cocoa stain. Equipped with hidden finger pulls under the drawers, the Essex is the perfect bridge between modern and traditional styles without sacrificing an ounce of WS integrity.

8. Componibili

Designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri more than thirty years ago for Kartell in Italy, the Componibili storage modules are clever nightstands made of ABS polymers. They come in a cylindrical shape or a cube shape, and can be configured as a two-drawer unit, three-drawer unit, or a completely modular unit with no virtually no limitations. Described by Kartell as being “flexible, functional and practical”, the Componibili modules are on display at the MOMA in New York City and the George Pompidou Centre in Paris, France. Affordable and in white, black, red, or silver (add $15), they’re the perfect little addition to the design lover’s pad.

9. True Modern Nightstand

Liven up your bedroom, or that of your child’s with the colorful accent of the True Modern Nightstand in lime green, cool blue, or popsicle orange. Made from birch wood and wood veneer with a painted interior, you’ll notice its deep drawer with full extension, ball bearing drawer slides and a shelf. Not over-the-top modern, it’s a gentle display of simple lines and the entire nightstand is built to send completely assembled.

10. Sparrow Nightstand

Made from a lustrous Baltic birch wood, the Sparrow Collection is expertly crafted in Latvia.
