Get Swept Away by Lee Broom’s One Light Only at London Design Festival
The shape and glitter of trinkets and gems lend themselves quite well to lighting, which is why we've seen some lovely lamps inspired by jewelry. Mattson's RGB lights reincarnate the beads on your grandmother's costume brooches; and Urquiola's Caboche Lamp gives form to the rhinestones of a 1930s bracelet. In time to show at the London Design Festival 2010, designer Lee Broom is also contributing a jewelry-inspired lamp entitled One Light Only.
One Light Only. Designed by Lee Broom
Influenced by "Art Deco jewellery and late 70's fashion photography," One Light Only is a pendant lamp in either matte white or polished gold. The shape of the lights mimics a faceted gem while also paying tribute to the strong geometric patterns of 1970s design and fashion prints (Broom's creation reminds me of Mahogany in all her glorious splendor). The lights all have a contrasting interior shell-gold with white, white with gold-so that they play with texture and luminosity. The matte white gets a splash of resplendence from the shiny gold interior, and the glossy gold gets a dose of seriousness from the matte white interior.
One Light Only comes in two different sizes, so you can mix small and large suspension lamps in order to create your own strands of luminous jewelry. Meant to be hung in clusters, One Light Only will be previewed "in Broom's new studio where an impressive, illuminated installation will take you back to the last days of disco." Instead of a disco ball, perhaps we can consider One Light Only a disco bauble.
