The word “coalesce” is defined by my go-to online dictionary as “to grow together or into one body; to unite so as to form one mass, community, etc.; amalgamate, fuse, blend, merge.” Useful information to be sure, but as with many ten-dollar words, one only truly understands them through regular use. Perhaps that’s why the design firm known as “Coalesse” chose to retain the most elegant connotations of its ancestral term while eschewing the confusing spelling.

For this manufacturer prides itself on delineating the “new imperatives of work and life as the line between them blurs… our name signifies coming together and we make a direct connection between professional work settings and lifestyle through our award-winning furnishings for office, home and other work/life destinations.” A certain coalescence thus insinuates itself into the recent Enea Lottus Collection that took the stage at last month’s NeoCon. Not only does this versatile collection of tables, stools, and stacking chairs evince the propitious synergy of live/work space, it also exemplifies the admirable fusion of talents in the Barcelona-based trio Lievore Altherr Molina.

Last known to readers for their Catifa 60 Lounge Chair, the threesome joined forces with Coalesse to create the slim, cool, comfy, and pragmatic assemblage they call Lottus. The new range “is suitable for many applications including meeting spaces, cafeterias, and more and brings a simple and clean design aesthetic to live/work settings.” Lottus personifies the collaborative spirit–whether that means open spaces peopled by light and lively furnishings or the spaces that transcend traditional live/work boundaries.

Each element of Lottus is highly versatile. Tables come in varied heights (18”, 30”, 36”, and 42”) and circumferences (30” to 72”). Further options include veneers and laminates in multiple colors. Bases are metal painted in your choice of silver metallic, black gloss, white gloss, or brown. Lottus’ collection of stools is equally multi-dimensional. They’re available in café-, counter-, and bar-heights with or without arms. Pedestal or sled styles constitute the bases, and seats offer solid plastic shells or upholstered inserts in a multitude of colors. Lastly, Lottus’ stacking chairs sport an ultra-thin seat and longish, insectivorous legs and arms (except, of course, the armless version). You can count on these lightweight numbers to stack up to 10 high. And they’re portable and hygienic—virtues that enhance the ease with which Lottus will coalesce into an attractive and functional addition to your live/work space.
