The MunNY Exhibit

No rest for the weary. With ICFF and New York Design Week in full swing, sleep and relaxation were out of the question this past weekend. Saturday, a couple of drinks into the night, (after some drinks in the early evening) I gathered enough energy to fight the crowds at The Ace Hotel – and made my way into The MunNY Exhibit. What is it – and how do you get involved? 23 iconic NYC designers each began with an identical blank canvas: Kid Robot's MUNNY figure. Now, each designer’s Munny is being auctioned off on eBay to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation.

Imagine 23 MunNY figures lined up in a row – in a dimly-lit basement. Creepy, but pretty cool too. These one-off designs included Vladmir Kagan’s pearl-clad, eye-lash enhanced beauty, Dror Benshetrit’s See Saw MunNY, Brad Ascalon’s Swarovski-sheathed design, along with numerous others by esteemed designers such as Stephen Burks, Jeffrey Bernett, and Todd Bracher. Karim Rashid’s pink and white version was easy to identify (surely you’ve seen him in his legendary pink suit with a white ruffled top…) – but I was disappointed to learn that he didn’t coordinate. And it’s impossible not to mention the Snow Cone MunNY by Frederick McSwain. The brilliant ice-sculpture actual fed hungry observers, including myself.
