Geometry found in nature has an organic quality unlike much of the computer generated geometry we see in design today. Ritva Puotila’s paper carpet designs have a natural feel that comes from both her design sense and choice of material. Paper yarn is an ecologically produced, recyclable, rapidly renewable resource that is as durable and strong as it is beautiful. The paper yarn is spun from kraft paper, which is also used as a raw material in food packaging. Due to the density of the fibres, the resulting carpet collects neither dust nor dirt – an important property, and common concern with carpet.
Woodnotes white paper is produced without the use of chlorine gas, and the dyes used to colour the yarn contain neither halogen-organic compounds nor heavy metals. The natural color pallete in combination with the minimalist designs provides a refreshing modern look that is not harsh or cold. This class of design is sustainable not only in the materials used, but also in the timeless quality of the product that withstands trends and the inevitable garbage heap.
