Scream! A Louder Eco-Chair by PIE Studio
There’s something familiar about the conical shaped hanging piece on the Scream chair. Its tough to pinpoint right away, probably due to the materiality or the fact that its a piece of furniture and not an anatomical model. The name “Scream” should give it away, but for me, I had to read the product description before it clicked.
cream. Designed by PIE Studio.
Constructed with a stainless steel frame and hand woven natural aluminum strands, the Scream chair can be made of recyclable and recycled aluminum. The inspiration derives from a screaming mouth exposing the Uvula. The Uvula moves down and touches the floor as one sits on the chair. What? “The uvula (pronounced /ˈjuːvjələ/) is the conic projection from the posterior edge of the middle of the soft palate, composed of connective tissue containing a number of racemose glands, and some muscular fibers (musculus uvulae).” Wikipedia
O.K., so the shape of the chair is referencing the view of the inside of a mouth when in scream mode. Why a person sitting on the chair would cause the “Uvula” to hit the ground in beyond me, but the up-close detail of the material make up of the chair is truly interesting. PIE studio is a multidisciplinary design studio that focuses on eco-friendly furniture and accessories. Bannavis Andrew Sribyatta designs use renewable and sustainable natural resources, recycled/recyclable synthetic materials and non-toxic additives in its designs and products. Much like the Moebius Chair by Onyx, PIE studio focuses on naturally destructive plants such as water hyacinth and liana, which are pest plants that exist in abundance. I prefer the furniture pieces by PIE studio which are made from slicker materials: metal, wood and other composite slab materials. Their use of plant material is messier than that of Onyx, and the more angular materials lend themselves well to the creative shapes that PIE studio is noted for.
