An image of crooked slats in a weathered picket fence brought about the idea of asymmetrical wood pieces supporting each other – which in turn led to Alissia Melka-Teichroew’s Peasant Collection. Friendly and familiar shapes balanced with slightly surreal and off-kilter features, the collection, consisting of furniture and lighting, is an examination on the properties of wood. Despite the name and stimulus, which appear entirely in tandem, the collection boasts a refined aesthetic.

Peasant Collection is a product of by byAMT Inc for which Alissia Melka-Teichroew is founder and creative director. The first of the series, Milk Stool, is “a sturdy but uneven chair propped up by expressive and lopsided legs” and Milk Bench is an larger-scaled evolution of this piece. From the stool and bench grew an entire family of furniture including All is Vanity, a mirror based on an easel, and The Skirt Side Table, designed to look like a fixed table cloth; a “hoop skirt in motion” – a variation on the original idea of wooden slats. Playful, innovative and expressive, the collection is simultaneously fun and functional.

The collection consists of furniture and lighting: the All Is Vanity mirror, Milk Stool, American Beauty Desk Light and Hanging Lamp, and of course the Skirt Side Table.
