As a child, I loved to read. Anything. Labels, actually, entertained me for hours. In case you’re wondering, I did suffer from a tinge of obsessive-compulsive disorder. So I read shampoo bottles in the bath, and cereal boxes at the kitchen table, and clothes labels at the store. When I accompanied my parents to the pharmacy, I read nail polish colors. I also read lipstick colors. Those exotic names were the pinnacle of label reading. I consequently fashioned a dream for myself that as an adult I would be the person who named cosmetics. Alas, that dream did not come true. Luckily, I get to write about well-named furniture once and a while.

The Glossy Lipstick is a limited edition sofa hailing from Italy, the brainchild of Sand & Birch, the design studio seeking “to re-interpret the concept of furnishing and to bring other meanings, other senses and other lives to Objects.” The duo behind the company, Andrea Fino and Samanta Snidaro, seem to be courting those furniture-lovers who favor exclusivity, since Glossy Lipstick will only be available in a limited edition of six. The candi-colored sofa does indeed look good enough to eat. This glass, lexan, and silicone creation is aptly referred to by Sand & Birch as “a concept art design piece.”

Shiny as Cherries in the Snow nail polish mixed with a tinge of Black Cherry lipstick and Purpura Orchid eye shadow, Glossy Lipstick looks like something you might sit on or suck on, depending on your mood. And if you should ingest a piece of the glistening amarinthine jewel, I imagine you would enter another dimension, quite like Alice in Wonderland. Perhaps you’d fall down through a hole, passing floating Chesterfields and Chandeliers, drifting past hovering cabinets and carpets. On your way down, you might spot items such as Delicious, Cindy Lamp, and 25 Chairs.
