Salvini Marmi’s Star Light

Salvini Marmi has dealt in stone and marble since 1975. In 2004, the Italian company set out to discover if they could revolutionize the material by offering “innovative lines that could give a modern interpretation of marble.” In conjunction with Architect Baratelli’s Studio Asia, Salvini started a new company named Salvini Stile, which serves as a design division tasked with “going beyond the stereotype of marble, which is commonly seen as a cold anonymous material.” Salvini Stile now offers a range of marbles scratched with linear designs, embedded with cut crystals, and decorated with glass and leather mosaics.

A small LED light encased in metal, Star can be inserted into marble for interior or exterior applications. Close up, the light looks like a peephole, making the stone more mysterious—as if you could look inside or beyond it. From afar, the effect of Star is celestial. Used in any random pattern, Star creates the astral look of a night sky. In a regular arrangement, such as evenly spaced around a mirror, Star lends the marble an unexpected glow—it also interrupts the “cold smoothness” of the stone by adding visual and textural contrast.

The company explains, “Salvini Stile’s mission is to offer a living concept and not a mere general product.” With Star, as with the other lighting innovations, the life generated should be radiant and celestial, something fit for a king.
