If Walls Could Talk: Strukt Design’s Digital Wallpaper

The black and white striped walls come alive through illuminated moving stripes and even Pac Man animation that recognizes success with a “Mission Complete” banner over a flashing, color-changing wall. Büro Hirzberger’s office space in Vienna features “Digital Wallpaper“, or illuminated walls that “stream” video and realtime content.

Strukt Design was given complete creative freedom by the client, in this self-initiated project, to “decorate” the walls. They developed a system to project undistorted content onto any surface, using multiple projectors to map the architecture. “The program developed by Strukt is scripted in vvvv and is scalable to any number of projectors and any architectural shape.” If walls could talk, what would they say? Although currently the cider and real time content are limited to the likes of stripes and Pac Man, more visualizations are in development. “The content could also be made interactive, reacting to people passing the ground-floor offices,” according to its designers. Static wallcoverings are in abundance.  On 3Rings, we’ve chronicled beautiful patterned wallpaper by MarimekkoAbigail Borg and Jill Malek.  But physically dynamic surfaces are rather new.  Surely you’ve seen large-scale screens and  facades that achieve similar aesthetics on flat surfaces, but undistorted content on walls that twist and turn is crossing new grounds.
