IIDEX/NeoCon Canada 2009 will hit Toronto September 24-26, bringing a unique blend of A+D products to our attention. Exhibiting at the show’s Light Canada Expo and Conference once again this year will be Eurofase, conveniently located in Toronto. Now in its third decade, “Eurofase continues its evolution as a provider of artful illumination.” Their pendant fixtures, in particular, have transfixed many, earning the company admirers near and far. Part of their success stems from the extent of styles they offer, ranging from the traditional chandelier such as Talula—elongated crystals dripping from chrome scrolls–to the innovative pendant such as Ether—globose bubbles descending from a lunar disc.

Whatever they conceive, Eurofase lights transform any room, infusing it with light and mood: “Beyond the style or finish of a fixture is the ambiance created for the space within which it resides.”
Their 12-light pendant Vex makes a decidedly modern statement with its intense geometry. Polished chrome components align in diamond shapes, casting halogen glow from within their web-like grid. Although vex can mean “to annoy,” the word also denotes perplexity—and I like reading the Vex Pendant in this light. The light can be expanded and contracted like some mathematical or scientific tool. It also looks markedly different from various angles. Below it, you will notice the criss-cross pattern. From across the room, you will see how its straight wires and round ceiling mount create an entirely different silhouette.

Vex is as much maze as network, equal parts organic and technological.
