At #IIDEX09: Break 4100 by Vibia—a New Look in Outdoor Illumination
When last we heard from manufacturer Vibia, they’d just placed the finishing touches on the exciting and clever—and infinitely expandable—Ameba Suspension Lamp. If that innovative piece was their answer to the air-conditioned indoor days of summer, the 4100 Break Outdoor Lamp is their solution to the illumination requirements of gardens and patios amidst late September’s brisk eves. Designed by the enigmatically-named Xuclà & Alemany—whose Catalån lineage puts them in the enviable company of Martí Guixé—Break is a stylishly sculptural addition to any outdoor space.
Break 4100. Designed by Xuclà & Alemany for Vibia.
Designed by the enigmatically-named Xuclà & Alemany—whose Catalån lineage puts them in the enviable company of Martí Guixé—Break is a stylishly sculptural addition to any outdoor space. Like the equally eye-catching Frame, Break is a tactile piece. Made of cast concrete, the lamp is a formidable geometric presence, its linear profile softened only by the jaunty tilt of its top, which is situated slightly askew to create the illusion of a rotating, light-emitting shaft. Illusory or not, the methacrylate-diffused amber glow is real enough–and just the ticket to brighten up shadowy thickets or highlight those perfectly manicured hedgerows of Beech. Break 4100 is available in three heights (12, 43, and 81 cm), each ideally suited to achieve a specific effect—whether the pragmatically-minded illumination of a rough cinder path, or the mere vanity of bathing a favored bromeliad in Break’s appealing ochre tones.
Break 4100 comes in multiple finishes, all the better to match the piece to the environment’s style: white or silver lacquer for clean and minimalist spaces (I picture the severely-clipped turf and rectilinear paths of L.A.’s Getty Museum); polished concrete (a la urban oases like New York’s Silvercup Studios); and a weathered rust (ideal for the stylishly unkempt grounds of Denver’s Botanic Gardens). However you choose to integrate this new look in outdoor lighting, Break is sure to captivate all manner of nighttime peripatetics and denizens of the dark with its warm and comforting hue.
