Modules make everyone’s life easier. They acknowledge that space varies from home to home. In fact, the best modular furniture comes with enough range in shape and dimension to accommodate areas large and small (and even oddly shaped). The new Seracs couch, designed by Alfredo Häberli and manufactured by Fredericia Furniture, grants wishes by fulfilling spacial needs and delivering a relaxed style that’s ideal for today’s multi-purpose living rooms.

Häberli ’s seating system is available in lots of colors, both fabric and leather, “which means you can create your own entirely unique couch with Seracs.” Five modules are available, including a sculptural armrest (my favorite)—do with them what you will! Seracs is successful at least in part because of its international flair. The Argentinean-born Häberli relocated to Switzerland as a teenager; two continents and two countries known for their style helped mold him into a visionary designer “known around the world for his uncomplicated, minimalist designs.” Häberli explains that his artistic philosophy is shaped by the principle of observation: “Observing is the most beautiful way to think. I am constantly discovering new things in a single object.” I imagine that his transcontinental upbringing let him absorb quite a lot simply through his focused attention. By pairing with Fredericia Furniture, a family-owned furniture house established in 1911 that’s known for “creating international respect for Danish design,” Häberli is adding yet another global player into the Seracs mix.

The end result is a versatile couch that can be sedate or stimulating depending on its configuration, color, and upholstery. The plywood frame, foam-covered pieces are mounted on a steel plinth, counterweighted for balance. Choose the color of the base, as well as of the furniture to piece together your own look. The base is available in classic black or white, and also in more unusual hues such as royal blue, acid green, and ruby red. Fabric choices are great too, with tangerine, wisteria, and hunter green, for example. And since you can choose modules in different upholsteries to begin with, the end result can be amazingly playful. You could create a Seracs with pieces in the same color family, making it intensify gradually by using deeper and deeper tones. Or keep the upholstery uniform and draw attention to Seracs’ different silhouettes. Either way, Seracs is a fabulous collection for Fredericia—a Danish trendsetter that also looks toward the future: “Furniture that is a delight to the eye every day – also when taken over by the next generation.”
