At #NeoCon09: A Place Where Moss is Orange

Here at 3rings, we want to bring you the best coverage of NeoCon09 possible, which is why our task-master boss insists we write as many posts as possible, which is why my back and neck ache something horrible (where’s the Embody Chair when you really need it?).

Moss chair. Manufactured by Thonet.

A wonderful gentleman—in a bow tie no less—at the Thonet showroom understood my predicament to interview as quickly as I could speak and shared the finer points of Moss. The modular seating system is composed of only eight pieces, simplifying the design process: this “saves time, saves money, and saves energy,” Business Development Manager Joel Riley states. The trademarked Quik-Kinect ganging system keeps everything in place, and optional electrical power keeps everyone connected. All of the single seats, benches, and connectors come with aluminum, wood, or castor legs.

And the engineered hardwood construction with Sencoat fasteners makes the seating system sturdy: Sencoat uses screws and glue (when the screws heat up during drilling, the glue is released). Moss can be upholstered however you wish, but the sample at the Thonet showroom proved tantalizing in tangerine. Suited for student unions, corporate atriums, and lobbies, Moss has a nice square profile but also accentuates curves with its seat sides and 180° and 45° connectors.
