Weekly Wrap-Up: Best of BKLYN DESIGNS 2009
Though I don’t want to ruin the surprise for those 3rings readers who have not yet had the opportunity to see the work of BKLYN DESIGNS 2009 exhibitors themselves, we spent a good chunk of time at St. Ann’s Warehouse today scoping out what really rocks. If you’ve been paying attention, there’s is no question that we’ve given a lot of love to this local design show, and now having experienced the work and met the designers in person, it is worth giving an extra shout out to a few of the show stoppers.
Wired Side Table. Designed by Scott Behr and Matthew Warren of TMRnyc.
1. Easy to love and hard to miss (his is the first booth when you walk into the warehouse) is Hugh Hayden’s first ever line of furniture entitled Funature, a whimsical collection of tables and chair made up of the balls you find in the playpens at Chuck E Cheese’s. Can’t afford the real thing? The girls (and boys, depending on how courageous you are) can buy a version of the brightly colored balloon earrings by Katie Vitale for $7 a pop. Also be sure to check out another Funature piece made of tennis balls featured in the Christopher Coleman-curated set at the BSH Showroom, 1 Main Street.
2. Slogging through emails at your office desk every day not your cup of tea? Hello Scott Behr, Matthew Warren and the design team at TMRnyc! Injecting a healthy dose of bright color and electricity to the ordinarily drab and soul-sucking design statements of office furniture is TMRnyc’s series of Wired tables. Equipped with sockets and primary colors packing unusual punch, TMRnyc finally has us imagining a working environment where we can keep our attention “plugged in” to a project.
3. Where do the highest level of technical sophistication, perfectly aged woods and a keen attention to detail meet? Daniel Moyer takes the art and craft of and passion for woodworking to a new level with his newest collection of chairs, ottomans and lamps which beautifully blend a traditional zen-inspired design, richly layered structures and striking fabrics.
4. BKLYN DESIGNS veterans yet still eternally hip, designers Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath of Uhuru bring a strong measure of the international and cutting edge to this local venue. Of particular note are the wall-mounted chairs, seating mash-ups composed of discarded Louis the 14th-style wood frames and sleek metal seats. Seriously rad.

5. And last but not least is the work of IMAKE Studio, a first-time BKLYN DESIGNS exhibitor showing Octavo, a modular conference table designed to adapt to the personalities and business of almost any group. From strictly boardroom and blazers to campfire-style Kumbaya, the patent-pending Octavo guarantees to bring a successful conclusion to any meeting.
BKLYN DESIGNS will continue through the weekend (May 8-10) with a host of hot events that promise to make your day in DUMBO a good one!
