The Many Faces of Joanne Lombard’s Three-in-One Rolling Sofa

What do we really mean when we say “modular?” Much like the catch-all “green,” the increasingly popular modifier has evolved to represent a conceptual approach to an increasing problem: diminished resources and dwindling space. So modular can signify any number of solutions via “multi-use” pieces.

This implies products that are easy to construct, and, conversely, “deconstruct” (Christoffer Martens’ Modular Bed and Casulo’s Life in a Box); products that assemble into multliple and varying incarnations to make the best possible use of space (Arconas); and products constructed of light-weight materials that can do double duty indoors or out (Q-Couch, Ami Ami). Shall we throw a fourth category into the mix? Irish newcomer Joanne Lombard would surely answer in the affirmative. Her Three in One Rolling Sofa—sponsored by Serralunga at Erasmus in Politecnico di Milano—is a versatile, light-weight, and, yes, “modular” piece whose virtues are in its tip-ability. Because the multiple identities of Lombard’s creation reside not in interconnectivity between dis-assembable “units” but in the different sides of the piece itself.

Light enough to simply roll from one of its four sides to the next, the three-in-one reveals a new face to the world with each revolution: a roomy two-seater sofa, a comfy chaise lounge, and a sturdy rectangular table. The piece’s aesthetic is simple and sleek, adaptable to a wide variety of outdoor schemes, and—as the designer is quick to remind us—indoors as well (probably most likely for itinerant types, young bachelors/bachelorettes, and students). In addition to the multiple functions, the identity of the Rolling Sofa is transformable too—the transparent acryllic that constitutes the side panels is change-able and comes in several complimentary colors. A worthy addition to the growing line-up of modular solutions, the Rolling Sofa is a curiosity and a cure. Never before has switching out one function for another been so easy or so fun!
