Weekly Wrap-up: Highlights from the AD Home Design Show 2009

If you haven’t heard about Architectural Digest’s 2009 Home Design Show, you need to emerge from the cave that is your cubicle, design studio and/or bed (3rings hopes for your sake that in this economy, these three do not all compose the same space). Boasting some 300+ exhibitors of premier home furnishings, the AD Home Design Show 2009 is without question one-stop shopping for those still with cash to spend, and also for those window-shoppers without.

1. As a Manhattan-based operation, we can’t help but show a little love for the locals. A design firm name you are sure to be hearing a lot more about in the coming years is Rich, Brilliant, Willing, a Manhattan-based design trifecta started by RISD grads Theo Richardson, Charles Brill and Alexander Williams. They are curious and clever minds behind the Russian Doll Wood Table and the Excel Floor Lamp, two examples of an already extraordinary collection of cool and inventive RBW designs.

2. And in the greater borough of Brooklyn, 3rings is gaga for Uhuru Design’s sharp and practical Striper End Table. Dedicated employers of materials “reclaimed, recycled, repurposed, reused, or otherwise rejected from their original function”, Uhuru’s products demonstrate a keen interest in and commitment to sustaining the growing popularity of sustainable design.

3. Another master woodworker flexing his craft muscles is David Stine of Dow, Illinois-based Stine Woodworking. Of particular interest is the Wave Bench, a unique seating element that we love for the way it powerfully embodies undulating decibel levels in 3D.

4. If it’s sound and comfort you’re after, look no further than Natuzzi’s Sound Chair, a luxurious leather armchair with expertly hidden ear-height speakers and an mp3 jack for a multi-sensorial and highly pleasurable experience.

5. Another standout at this year’s AD Home Design Show is USM Haller’s clean, ultra-functional modular storage systems. A design cult classic and a staple for the high-and-mighty curators over at MoMA, USM Haller’s systems have made the 3rings editors’ product wish lists for the day our offices get a re-design.

6. And last but not least are the arresting designs of Bridgetown, CT-based Get Back Inc., a design company and showroom that specializes in “vintage industrial” mash-ups including lighting, tables, seating, storage and objects. Far and away one the absolute coolest is the Adjustable Cast Iron Table Base.

With any luck, this list will helped to compel you out of your cave and towards this impressive show. The Architectural Digest Home Design Show 2009 takes place on Pier 94 through Sunday, March 29 from 10am-6pm daily. Have fun!
