The Shape of Things to Come

Here’s a question for all those designers who made careers of renovating 1970’s kitchens outfitted in those terribly ubiquitous shades of avocado green: could you ever have imagined that the color would enjoy a re-ascendance? If the answer is no, than you’ve clearly never visited Udine, Italy. The home to manufacturer Moretuzzo, Udine is “where the stories of centuries of furnishings are told and sometimes interrupted by modern finishes of glass and steel muted by the musicality of colorful lacquered finish.”

Moretuzzo’s pr folks must have been describing the shape-changing, physics-defying, and undoubtedly trend-setting virtues of the Class X system of kitchen cabinetry, countertops, and range. And however much it may surprise the aforementioned renovators of kitchens past, the yellow-green facing is the least surprising of the elements of Class X. Starting with the notion that the pervasive kitchen island disrupts natural flow and imposes a sometimes oppressive geometricality, Moretuzzo resolved to incorporate straight lines and curves into their scheme, yet endeavored to retain an airy, light, and open feel.

The crucial ingredient here is the “invisible” supporting glass frame, a feature that allows the languorous S of the countertop to extend ad infinitum without the impediments of visible framing. The extended curve thus provides sufficient space to accommodate four gas burners—strung sensuously along the same arc of the counter in an arresting curvilinear arrangement.

The virtues of Class X range far and wide. The open arrangement allows for full interaction with the resident chef (no big block of wood to partition off hosts from guests), and the curved counter-space in neat proximity to cabinets and sink creates an efficient workflow. And of course, there’s that olive-toned hue to liven up the party. Moretuzzo’s skillful integration of the once-maligned shade with a lustrous palette of glass and steel while make you gleefully exclaim, avocado is back!
