Poppa Bear: This Chair is Just Right
If you know the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” then you know that this fairy tale heroine was one of the first interior designers in literary history. Always searching for the perfect bed or the perfect chair, Goldilocks insisted on trying out all the bears’ furniture. In this spirit, Modernica offers the Hans Wegner-Papa Bear inspired Poppa Bear Chair, which might have been too big for the golden-haired girl, but turns out to be just right for the rest of us.

What better endorsement than from Interior Design Magazine? Featured in their January 2009 issue, the Poppa Bear Chair looks rather stylish in Elie Tahari’s New York studio. The monochromatic scheme of Tahari’s showroom is a perfect set for Poppa Bear Chair’s inviting shape-a shape that’s just as relaxing as the room’s calm grey hues. While the Tahari studio is a great place to display Modernica’s chair, the Poppa Bear Chair will go nearly anywhere, thanks to its classic form and countless fabric options. Though Poppa Bear looks very mid-century in thick grey wool and black leather, it can also adapt to more traditional environments. In Laurelwood Chenille or Paramount Chocolate fabric, Poppa Bear Chair partners well with crown moulding and Solomonic columns.
Out of the house and into the office, Poppa Bear Chair works well in waiting areas: try Posh Lantern (a bright orange Crypton-coated polyester) or Milano Aloe (vertical stripes in greens and yellows), either of which works as accent pieces. If your workspace is dominated by clean, white surfaces (perhaps for MILK and Mac fanatics), then choose Angel Wing Wool (undyed and thickly textured) or Venetian Chalk (super white and stain-resistant). The naugahyde vinyl that Modernica calls Spirit is mildew-resistant and comes in an unbelievable range of colors, including Yellow, Gunmetal and American Beauty (a cherry red). That makes it a great option for dining endchairs or dens, where spills of red wine and mead (I thought I’d throw that in, since we began with Goldilocks) won’t matter.
Getting back to basics, Poppa Bear Chair measures 39″H x 35.5″L x 36″D, an ideal size for a proper lounge chair. The walnut frame peeks through in the arms and legs-and what a pair of legs. Tapered in that Danish Modern way, Poppa Bear Chair’s legs indeed recall the original Papa Bear Chair designed by Hans Wegner. Given that Modernica manufactures Modern furniture classics, this resemblance should come as no surprise. Better yet, Modernica still builds everything in their downtown Los Angeles studio, “just blocks” from where they began 20 years ago. These days, this may be a plus for American buyers who are trying to buy local in order to strengthen the economy. Poppa Bear Chair is the perfect option for financial and artful reasons: it is just right, as Goldilocks would say.
