Your very own Kokoon for Valentine’s Day
If your idea of a Valentine’s Day respite includes shutting out any and all white noise, enveloping yourself (or selves) in softest cotton, and dozing the day through in the cool sway of the first spring breezes, you might consider making a mutual gift of the Royal Botania Kokoon free-standing hammock.
Kokoon free-standing hammock. Designed by Olivier Le Pensec for Royal Botania.
With origins as an importer of teak furniture from Indonesia, founders Kris Van Puyvelde and Frank Boschman quickly realized that importing wasn’t enough: “most of the stuff on the market was poor quality colonial style furniture.” They thought they could do better; thus, Royal Botania was born: “The name is an allusion to both the natural beauty of lush botanic gardens, and our matching supreme line of ‘royal class’ furniture.” Given the exotic island theme, it wasn’t long before they developed a reputation for “the most technically refined, most diverse outdoor collection on the planet,” of which Kokoon is a fine example.
Designed by Olivier Le Pensec, Kokoon is an appealing synchrony of wood, padded cotton, and a durable, weather and UV-resistant mesh called batyline. Options include stainless-steel framing and curtains-your inclusion of this last feature dependent, I suppose, upon your amorous inclinations (I’d go with the curtains, especially on Valentine’s Day). At roughly 8′ x 8′, Kokoon is spacious without taking over the entire yard; it’s a surprisingly compact footprint for what amounts to a comprehensive portable bedroom. I’d venture that, this time of year, it’s just right for Miami Verandas, South Texas sun porches, and the intimate backyard porticoes of the occasional southerly-exposed SoCal Bungalow.
If, however, the universe outside your window is yet enveloped in blankets of white and whipped with icy winds, spin a place for the Kokoon in your very own living room: Clear out an 8′ x 8′ spot, crank up the fireplace, and surround yourself with standing fans. The ruffling of Kokoon’s curtains in the waves of gentle heat will let you lull the day away in easy slumber, your dreams surprised with imaginings of June.
