At Design Miami: Morosus Chaise
A host of fêted names from the design community congregate every year at the Design Miami Fair. Aiming to provide an unparalleled setting for designers, design enthusiasts, and design institutions, the Fair is Highly patronized and will run from the 3rd to the 8th of December. The Design Miami Fair seems to encapsulate the thriving A&D scene, which centers around a blend of cultures and aesthetics. Hence it doesn't surprise us that at the event, industrial designer Roderick Vos will unveil his Morosus Chaise in a limited edition of 8 signed pieces.
Morosus Chaise. Designed by Roderick Vos. Manufactured by Priveekollektie.
A spirit of poised experimentation and surrealism typifies the Morosus ‘Studio Edition’ Chaise. The chaise mirrors a fluidity and style that is counter-reactive to the Le Corbusier's chaise lounge; which no doubt was one the most definitive icons of contemporary design. The stalwart sculptural shape of the aluminum cast chaise lounge is no accident, and thus Morosus emerges as an impenitent creation that avoids all design clich©s.
Type in Morosus in Google and Wikipedia will enlighten you about a certain Carausius morosus insect. Not the most obvious pick for a muse, but Vos himself admits that Morosus has an "insect like appearance," though the key source of inspiration for Vos was the "curved leaf shapes of Asian trees." The emphasis on structure is flagrant and the geometric shape of the legs/base has been inspired by the structures of leaf venation. The chaise seeks to bring to the surface the vitality and splendor of nature and also highlights the global and progressive perspective of the designer.
Says Vos: "I wanted to create new 'object' for this century, as a reaction to the somewhat orthopedic looking structure of the well-known chaise longue from Le Corbusier, dated from the 20's. The only resemblance is, that this object also would be crafted for maximum body comfort."
Manufactured for Priveekollektie, Morosus was developed using the Cad Cam Program and completed by utilizing an extremely multifarious sand casting-mould. The chaise leads me to an almost hypnotic introspective as its hard not to be taken with its sinuous curves and organic structure. The Morosus Chaise has the cognoscenti sitting up and taking notice as it contravenes conventions, embraces nature, and makes an indomitable creative statement.
