Zeppelin S1 Chandelier
Marcel Wanders’ Zeppelin S1 Chandelier for Flos doesn't seem to be inspired by the classic Zeppelin jets, and we are grateful of that decision! In fact, according to Wanders his creation reinterprets the famous Cocoon Lamps designed by Achille Castiglioni in the 1960’s, which beautifully played off the contrast between the established and the contemporary.

The Zeppelin S1 Chandelier may be conceptualized with a contemporary rhythm, however Wanders has managed to stay true to the original design. The steel structure of the lamp has been sprayed with white resin and the diffuser, which is a faceted crystal globe, has been placed at the lower centre of the lamp. The PMMA ‘candles’ in the centre of the structure is for pure ornamental value and also a testimony to Wanders design skills.
The decorative element is omnipresent in each and every curve of the S1 however this hasn't taken away from the functionality of the lamp. The S1 measures 43.3″ d X 29″ h; and also ships with eight feet of cord. The crystal globe, which houses a 1 x 150 watt T10 HA bulb, lends a numinous quality to the chandelier since faceted elements give light a whole new dimension.
The Zeppelin S1 Chandelier fulfills the credo of a timeless design ethos and modern expression. This re-imagined and reworked creation echoes an avant-garde sensibility that plays on flexible geometry via the juxtaposition of delicate lines with solid curves. It's also quite apparent that Wanders isn't satisfied with merely commemorating the already established and marries his own wit with love of good idea in the S1.
