American textile leader Maharam has announced that Herman Miller will take ownership of the privately owned company at the end of April 2013. A letter from Maharam owners Michael and Stephen Maharam, seen below, details how this decision was reached and plans for the transition.

Over these past fifteen years at Maharam, we’ve sought to foster a culture measured by the caliber of the things we create, though more so by the nature of the people associated with this company and their desire to do things thoughtfully. The legacy of Maharam matters to us deeply, as does its ongoing energy and progression. With this in mind, come end-April, Herman Miller will take ownership of Maharam.

Much as we have struggled with this decision, the realities of generational transition coupled with timing and circumstance in our lives have brought us clarity. It is our firm conviction that Herman Miller will provide Maharam the greatest opportunity to flourish over time. Our philosophical kinship makes this difficult step a far easier one. We believe that Herman Miller has the appropriate culture, intellect and resources to ensure Maharam a bright future while valuing our spirit and ways. They are respectful and enthusiastic about this patronage, and intend to grant us the autonomy necessary for the continued evolution of our unique approach.

Maharam will remain Maharam, capably managed by our present leadership. To assist in a measured transition, we will be staying on for the coming two years to provide a sense of “business as usual”. We don’t anticipate any significant adjustments in the way we do things, all our plans for the future remain fully intact, and we have confidence in a pleasant and positive status quo.

Thank you for your part in making Maharam the place we dreamed it could become, and which we feel certain it will continue to be.

As always…

Michael and Stephen

New orders in the third quarter were $382.2 million, 6.0% higher than the prior year period. Sequentially, net sales in the quarter decreased 4.1% from the second quarter of this fiscal year, while orders declined 19.7% over the same period. The adjusted third quarter earnings per share increased 23.1% from the same quarter in fiscal 2012.

Eames Foundation recently launched a campaign to raise funds to save the Eames House, a landmark of mid-20th century modern architecture, with the goal of raising $150,000 towards preserving and protecting the Eames house for the next 250 years. Partners Herman Miller, Vitra and Nebo helped create limited edition original prints to sell to help raise money for the cause.

To help preserve the Eames House and own a piece of the Eames legacy, people can purchase these hand-numbered original prints for 75 dollars each.

They are 100 percent original works inspired by the elegant geometry and understated simplicity of Eames designs. Only 500 of each limited edition print will be produced, and all purchases are tax-deductible (though each donor should consult with their tax advisor).

For the campaign, Eames Foundation partnered with Herman Miller and Vitra to create the Authenticity Fund for this project. They are matching donations of 75 dollars for each print purchased.

The Eames House, close to 70-years-old, was one of roughly two-dozen homes “designed to express man’s life in the modern world,” and is now in need of renovation. The Eames Foundation also partnered with award-winning digital marketing agency, Nebo, to design the limited edition prints and website for the campaign.

These distinctions recognize companies, within their respective industries, who are best prepared to seize the opportunities and manage the risks deriving from economic, environmental, and social developments.

The Sustainability Yearbook is the world’s most comprehensive publication on corporate sustainability and has grown to become one of the leading reference guides to the world’s sustainability leaders. This year’s 10th Anniversary edition spotlights the continued advancement of RobecoSAM’s sustainability criteria to reflect the evolution of corporate sustainability practices and looks ahead to the criteria that are likely to determine tomorrow’s sustainability leaders. In particular, the RobecoSAM experts go to the heart of the fundamental question of how companies can control their corporate responsibilities and reputational risk throughout their increasingly complex supply chains. Based on this, RobecoSAM recently introduced an enhanced framework for assessing companies’ approach to supply chain management.

Herman Miller is asking full-time students attending two or four-year U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities to answer this question through its fourth annual Student Video Contest.

According to Herman Miller’s latest research study, as technology continues to replace textbook-driven courses with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and structured lectures with collaborative conversations, it is becoming increasingly critical for campuses to future-proof the physical learning space, ensuring a transformative student experience and ultimately, future workplace achievement.

By answering the question “What Makes a Learning Space Great?” through Herman Miller’s Student Video Contest, students will have an opportunity to document elements contributing to a successful learning environment, such as collaboration stations and tech-friendly furnishings, while informing the future of learning space design.

Contest entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. EST on March 22, 2013. Representatives from Herman Miller will select three finalists whose submissions best represent creativity, originality, and appropriateness to the theme.

Herman Miller has announced that two of its customers are being honored in Penton Media’s American School & University 2012 Educational Interiors Showcase. SIUE Charter High School, STEM Learning Center and Saint Louis University (SLU), Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence Learning Studio were tapped for the annual competition that spotlights the nation’s most effective learning environments.

SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School in St. Louis, Illinois was awarded a Bronze Citation for its STEM Learning Center. Through partnering with Herman Miller, SIUE created the 1,300 square-foot Learning Center to spark student interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and to encourage practical, interactive learning in a relaxed environment. The resulting collaborative classroom features flexible furnishings like writeable glass panels and wall panels that double as whiteboards for brainstorming and group work, increased accessibility to internet connections and additional multimedia resources.

The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence Learning Studio at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri was recognized for outstanding design. With the help of Herman Miller’s Learning Spaces Research Program, the space was designed to enable SLU to test out the classroom of the future on a small scale before making a campus-wide design decision. The learning studio supports new teaching methodologies and delivers a more engaging, collaborative and flexible learning experience for contemporary teachers and students. It features a range of mobile chairs, tables and easels that can be reconfigured on the fly, as well as high-tech elements like a multi-screen video wall.

In its 22nd year, the American School & University awards are judged by a jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) members and education administrators on the following considerations: purposeful design, cost-efficient solutions and planning, inviting and engaging spaces, designs that create new solutions and uses, sensitivity to the community, transparent and integrated technology and innovation and creativity.
