The exhibit will display the Michelle Stuart’s work from the late 1960s to present day, including drawings, sculptures, her use of nontraditional natural materials, and photography. Works such as #1 Woodstock, NY (1973) and #5 Moray Hill (1973) were made outdoors by laying rolls of paper on the ground, smashing them with rocks, stroking them with earth, or rubbing them with graphite until the characteristics of a given site became ingrained in their surfaces. A video documenting Stuart’s piece Niagara Gorge Path Relocated (1975), a 460-foot long “scroll,” cascading down a bank along the Niagara River at Artpark in Lewiston, NY, will also be on view. The exhibition concludes with Stuart’s recent photographic grids composed of vintage and original images, expansive works which encapsulate the potent blend of real, imagined, and natural history that has characterized her work for over forty years.

Stuart has exhibited internationally for 40 years. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Brooklyn Museum, among many others, as well as in museums in Stockholm, Marseille, The Hague, Sydney, and Hamburg.

The exhibition traces Alice Aycock’s career from 1971 to the present, highlighting the major themes that have governed her artistic practice.

The 55 works at the Parrish Art Museum cover the years 1984 to the present, when Aycock developed an increasingly elaborate visual vocabulary, drawing upon a multitude of sources and facilitated in part by the use of computer programs. The Grey Art Gallery’s installation (on view through July 13) focuses on the years 1971–1984 and features 48 works, including detailed architectural drawings, sculptural maquettes, and photo documentation for both realized and imagined architectural projects.

The exhibition will travel next to Santa Barbara, where the two parts will be on view concurrently at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UC Santa Barbara, from January 25 through April 19, 2014.

Alongside his own studio pieces, Arad has collaborated with leading brands such as Alessi, Vitra, Swarovski, Moroso, Kartell, Le Coq Sportif and Kenzo. His architectural projects include the design of Yohji Yamamoto’s Tokyo flagship store, the Maserati showroom in Modena, and the Duomo Hotel in Rimini. Arad has presented solo exhibitions at MOMA in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Barbican in London.

Arad has created a major body of work for this exhibition, but is intentionally not releasing images or details about the show in order to keep viewers in suspense.

Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America will showcase how Michigan’s industrial and design history intertwined during the middle of the 20th century, creating an epicenter of Modern design that touched nearly every aspect of American life. Michigan’s industry, prosperity, and educational institutions attracted exceptional talent that defined the era.

The exhibition will begin with a symposium on June 13-16, held on Cranbrook’s Eliel Saarinen-designed campus.

Tours of significant sites also are part of the symposium schedule, including: Eero Saarinen’s General Motors Technical Center, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Palmer House, and Minoru Yamasaki’s Wayne State University.

The exhibition Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America will open to the public at Cranbrook Art Museum on June 14 and run through October 13, 2013. It will establish Michigan’s role in American Modernism from the early industrial architecture of Albert Kahn to the role of the automobile and furniture industries that contributed to Michigan’s design explosion after World War II.

As one of the lead partners in the renovation, Philips worked closely with the Rijksmuseum on the lighting design with a strong focus on the visitor experience and the conservation of the artworks. The renovated Rijksmuseum opened its doors on April 13, showcasing collections of the Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, all illuminated with Philips LED lighting. The LED lighting solution creates effects and visual contrasts that closely mimic the color rendition of natural daylight, presenting the artwork in the best way and enhancing the visitor experience.

Never Built: Los Angeles will explore the “what if” Los Angeles—what the city might have been—through a compilation of urban projects that never made it past the drawing board.

Frank Lloyd Wright, Civic Center Plan, Courtesy UCLA Special Collections

With drawings, models, videos and other media, Never Built: Los Angeles will examine visionary works that had potential to reshape Los Angeles. Additional ill-fated projects include various low- to moderate-income housing projects and plans for over 100 miles of subway tunnels that would have cohesively linked the vast metropolis. Many of these schemes—each promoting a denser, more connected, more vibrant city—are still relevant today. By allowing viewers to see Los Angeles in a new light, Never Built: Los Angeles also examines what causes grand architectural schemes to flounder.

Participants can use a paintbrush, a water atomizer, or anything damp to write messages and draw on the wall. The Water Light Graffiti provides a magical space to write temporary messages in an urban space without creating permanent defacement.
