The ASID has announced the winners of the 2012 ASID Student Chapter Awards. ASID Student Chapter Awards are given to outstanding student members, faculty and chapters responsible for promoting the ASID student member experience as an enriching learning tool for future interior designers.
Community Service/Fundraiser:
Mission Possible, Designing For Veterans - Illinois Institute of Art Chicago – The Illinois Institute of Art Chicago student chapter took on the role of facilitating Mission Possible with passion and excitement, but they couldn’t have known how much this project would impact them, the veteran they served and the community around them. The project focused on redesigning a bedroom and bathroom for injured veteran Cameron Crouch and his family. After losing both of his legs while on tour in Iraq, Crouch suffered additional damage to his spine and has been through 40 surgeries since 2007. After months of planning and fundraising for the cost of the renovation, the students spent their spring break in Mahomet, Ill., completing the installations.
Faculty Advisor:
Denny Holland, Allied ASID, Cañada College – Denny Holland has helped facilitate two large community service projects to help a senior citizen renovate and repair her home and to create a reading area for children at the Bayshore Day Care Center in Daly City, CA. Due to his support in expanding skills workshops and events, the student membership at the school is at an all-time high.

Outstanding Student Chapter:
Illinois Institute of Art Chicago – This chapter truly exemplifies a strong, multi-faceted group of talented students. In 2012, they took on a massive extracurricular community service project that spanned 18 months and helped an injured Iraq war veteran redesign his master bedroom and bathroom. By creating a detailed strategic plan, a year-round calendar and a point system for chapter members (which converts into cash for use toward trips or events), there was no shortage of ways for students to get involved. The enthusiasm and selflessness of these students has shown through their work inside and outside the classroom.
Media and Communications Award:
ACC IND Communicator - Arapahoe Community College – The ACC IND Communicator is a pivotal communication tool for interior design students. Its new design demonstrates exemplary use of the ASID student brand guide and the ASID guidelines for professional newsletters. It is published twice a semester and emailed to all interior design students, with additional hard copies available on campus. A popular new column lists useful interior design applications for smart technology.
Student Chapter Leader Award/Student Representative to the Board:
Karen Licea, Student ASID, University of Nevada — Las Vegas – As president of the UNLV student chapter, Karen Licea’s demonstration of creativity, sincerity and integrity is shown in and out of the classroom. From creating a new fundraiser and awarding student scholarships, to winning a national competition which introduces the design arts to disadvantaged learners and organizing skill workshops for all students, Karen sets an extraordinary example for others to follow.
