The Retail Design Institute Toronto Chapter announces the launch of a new store design competition for Ontario students of interior design and architecture. In 2012 the competition, called The YSmell Project, is open to final year undergrad students and focuses on scent as inspiration for a retail space designed to target the Gen Y consumer.
Students will create storyboards for one of five mall-based retail spaces of their choosing: clothing, electronics, footwear, sporting goods or jewelry/accessories. Students may enter multiple spaces with a limit of five submissions per student. Digital submissions will be accepted however the ten finalists will be required to furnish at least three 24”x 36” boards.
Ten finalists will be selected and their design boards will be on display during IIDEX/NeoCon Canada in the Retail Design Institute feature exhibit, September 20 & 21, 2012. The award ceremony will take place on the keynote stage during the show with one Grand Prize presented to the winner:
- A ticket to attend the 2013 Retail Design Institute 42nd Annual International Store Design Awards Gala in New York City in January 2013
- Round trip airfare from Toronto to New York City
- Hotel accommodations
- A per diem
- The winner will be partnered with an RDI Board Member who will make introductions to the event attendees; an international mix of world class retail design professionals.

Registration is open from Tuesday March 13 to Midnight, Friday, April 6.
The competition closes on June 15th, 2012 and all submissions must be received prior to closing.
