Soft Shapes: Lighting Trend

Characterised by their rounded forms, these playful lighting designs look (and in some cases are) soft enough to squeeze.

Hobo_Örsjö_Gustaf Nordenskiöld

Gustaf Nordenskiöld’s Hobo lamp for Örsjö is made by blowing opaque glass into a brass basket construction, expanding outwards and bulging through the wire structure. The name Hobo refers to the ‘luffarslöjd’ – bent metal constructions that used to be made by hobos in SmÃ¥land where Swedish glassworks began.

Wrong for Hay_Sinker-Pendant

Sinking below its moulded ABS  shade in a smooth dome shape, the simple, etched acrylic diffuser of Sebasian Wrong’s Sinker lamp for Hay emits a warm, even light. Available in two sizes, the Sinker lamp’s shade is supplied in a matt black or grey finish, and comes with a dimmable LED bulb.

Catch_LindseyAdelman

Lindsey Adelman's Catch Series of floor and suspension lamps combine contorted brass structures with slumped glass shades. Made by blowing the glass directly into the water-jet-cut brass structures, the two components fuse together as the glass collapses and sets during the cooling process.

Matteo Zorzenoni_MM Lampadari_ballotton

A decorative blown glass diffuser bulges out from the smooth copper shade of Matteo Zorzenoni’s Balloton lamp for MM Lampadari.

SoftLightbySimonFrambach_2

German designer Simon Frambach's Soft light is composed of a soft and flexible foamed polyurethane shade that covers an energy saving light bulb that's protected by a cage. The light illuminates the porous foam from the inside to create a soft glow. The Soft lamp can be squeezed into unused spaces or used as a pillow.
