NYCxDesign 2014: Monochrome Moments

Strong black graphic lines, geometric shapes and grids characterized many of the new designs on display at last week's NYCxDesign. Making a bold statement across furniture, lighting and textiles, this coming year looks set to be filled with many monochrome moments in interiors.

The confetti marquetry pattern on this credenza by Brooklyn studio Moving Mountains lends a playful quality to the hard blackened steel and ash case, while the Ceramic Sculptures by Keiko Narahashi enhance the monotone mood.

Grain Circlet Triple Sconce

Part of Grain's Circlet lighting series, which includes sconces, a chandelier and pendants, this handmade triple sconce pairs a minimal American ash canopy with hand blown glass diffusers. The graphic black grid is created with a black stain, while Efficient LED lighting components are neatly hidden in each canopy allowing the glass diffusers to illuminate without a visible bulb.

Alexander Girard Knot Environmental Enrichment Panel Herman Miller

In 1972, Alexnder Girard developed 40 decorative silkscreen designs to add an element of “aesthetic functionalism” to corporate spaces. Unlike his printed textiles, the panels consisted of single, stand-alone images that ranged from abstract patterns to figurative pictograms. Available from Fall 2014, Herman Miller will be making 12 of these decorative silkscreen designs available once again, including the bold monotone Knot design shown above.

Available in a variety of woods including Walnut, White Oak and Clear Pine, the U Chair by Assembly combines beautifully finished wood, hand stitched leather, and an upholstered hair-on cowhide seat.

Hialeh table Iacoli and McAllister

Composed of steel, brass, oak and smoked or clear glass, the graphic Hialeah Table is designed and made to order in the USA by Iacoli and McAllister. The tabletop, split into three distinct sections by the black powder coated steel frame, is made up of a square section of oak veneer europly and two trapezoid-shaped pieces of smoked or clear glass.
