I have to go way back to nudge my memory banks about the origins of the term "Cartesian"-ninth grade Algebra, to be precise, wherein I learned that it involves a system to identify the position of a point in three dimensional space. What does that have to do with Alexander Purcell Rodrigues' Cartesian Chair? Everything, as it turns out.

Aircraft Grade Aluminum and Precision CAD Technology Define the Cartesian Chair

The chair is a slim, strong, and sublimely attractive piece of high-tech minimalism that harnesses the best of materials science and CAD technology. Using the principals of Cartesian coordinates, Rodrigues translated the desired shape into an algebraic equation.

From there, it took but the machining and manufacturing expertise of colleague Neal Feay to turn the numbers into a machine-reproducible design that is hand-crafted as well.

The method allows Rodrigues to save time, expense, and material while producing a highly-functional and exquisitely ornamented piece in which "the entire back of the chair fades the pattern as it evolves."

Cartesian is stackable, flat-packable, and environmentally-friendly. It's also ergonomic and comfortable, making it versatile and adaptable to classrooms, offices, and hospitality venues.

About the Manufacturer: L.A.-based Alexander Purcell Rodrigues has embraced a new philosophy of design, one in which "dynamic collaborations with specialist manufacturers break down the normal constraints." A case in point of this new paradigm is his Cartesian Chair, in which he teamed up with manufacturer Neal Feay for a precision-engineered aluminum piece ornamented according to the mathematical principles of the Cartesian grid. Rodrigues' portfolio includes chairs, sofas, chaises, tables, and benches.
