Olivares Aluminum Chair for Knoll

Olivares Aluminum Chair for Knoll

Drawing inspiration from the great outdoor chair designs of the past, such as Harry Bertoia's wire frame side chair (1958) and Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper's Lambda Chair (1959), LA-based designer Jonathan Olivares worked with Knoll to create the perfect outdoor chair: not too heavy, certainly not too light, more comfortable than anything else, and something smart enough to be used indoors as well as out.

Jonathan Olivares’s Olivares Aluminum Chair for Knoll is a deft arrangement of material, technical craft, form, and color.

Composed of a die-cast aluminum body-contoured shell and extruded aluminum legs, the chairs’ feature plastic connections that allow them to stack neatly without scratching.

Weighing in at  just under 15 lbs, at its thinnest, the Olivares Aluminum Chair is three millimeters thick; at its widest points nearly three times that. This keeps the edges from being too sharp, but also allows the aluminum to stay cool.

A simple hole in the centre of the seat allows rain water to drain out and demonstrates how thin the aluminum is.

Flexible enough to be used in both indoors and outdoors, the gracefully contoured chair is available in a palette of eight bright, contemporary colors inspired by Italian fruturist paintings by artists such as Ennio Morlotti. The paint has a matte finish, which is scratch and UV resistant, as well as smooth to the touch.
