Daylight craving: Lighting Trend

As LED technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, architects and designers are now able to specify LED lighting that radiates a soft warm glow rather than a cold blue glare. Windowless rooms can be filled with panels of even, consistent light that provide an ambient alternative to the harsh glare of ugly fluorescent strip lighting.  These new lighting products allow us to simulate the comfort of sunshine in the dead of winter.

Daylight Series by Philippe Malouin: Philippe Malouin’s Daylight Series of modern wall sconces were designed to resemble light shining through plantation shutters, much like a window on your wall. Each individual slat is lined with LEDs that replicate the color temperature of daylight. www.philippemalouin.com

SkyCeilings by Sky FactorySky Factory’s Luminous SkyCeilings function as virtual skylights. The design consists of translucent image panels that are back lit with a choice of our energy efficient LED or fluorescent “daylight-balanced” lighting systems. The panels depict realistic illusory skies that give a sense of openness into otherwise confined environments. www.skyfactory.com

Fino by Amerlux: FINO is an LED light that’s designed to look as if it’s part of the architecture; like a narrow opening in the wall that allows sunlight to flood inside. The small-scale, ultra-shallow asymmetric LED luminaire can be wall or ceiling mounted for optimal indirect lighting. www.amerlux.com

Daylight has a very high (blue) color temperature, 5000 K. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but Philippe’s fixtures appear sub-3000 K.
