Booleanos Cabinet by Joel Escalona

While I can’t say for sure what designer Joel Escalona is after by naming his curious and curiously lovely trio of intersecting drawers “Booleanos,” I can conjecture that he’s referencing points of intersection, commonality, and exclusion—albeit, in a most playful way.

As you may remember, “Boolean Logic” (named for the 19th. Century mathematician George Boole) is the system of excluding or combining two distinct terms to algebraic ends, perhaps most familiar as Internet searches using “and” or “not.”

Booleanos plays on the concept by creating false-fronted drawers that suggest enmeshment where none exists. Seen from the front, the colorful intersecting drawers seem to be haphazardly stacked and strangely intertwined; seen from inside, they each reveal an interior surface that’s flat as the proverbial pancake.

Says Escalona, “Inspired by concepts such as construction-deconstruction and addition-subtraction, this cabinet was designed by using different wood finishes.” The varied tints create a colorful interplay that highlights the architectural trickery in a most aesthetically pleasing way.

Escalona created Booleanos for Objeto Glocal Deco, a commissioned work by Glocal Design Magazine in collaboration with Masisa, a leading Latin American manufacturer of mdf, mdp, and particle boards.
