Plastic is typically perceived as an inexpensive material that is associated with mass production. When Dirk Winkel set about designing the Winkel 127 lamp for Swedish brand Wästberg, he wanted to challenge this stereotype.

Winkel 127 challenges our perceptions of plastic by celebrating the material’s function, appearance and tactility

Winkel describes the lamp as, “a design that celebrated the actual material as it is, straightforward, solid and honest, with a concept of hiding nothing, but showing its innermost values to the outside. No second skin, no paint coat, the true, bold material in its pure form.”

Winkel resisted the urge to opt for a for a high performance material such as aluminium or steel, despite the fact that injection molded plastic couldn’t deliver the mechanical strength and rigidity that his design required. Instead, he overcame the problem by using a mechanical solution based on micro gas springs, widely used in the automotive and electronics industries. The gas springs have a lifespan of more than 50,000 compressions and give exceptionally good movement patterns.

He also opted to use a plastic that is based on over 60% biologically sourced material. To be precise, the lamp is made from a solid fiberglas reinforced biopolyamide created using sustainably sourced castor oil.

The light technology is based on a highly energy-efficient multichip LED solution. This consists of a cluster of diodes instead of several separate diodes. By using multichip LED, so called multi-shadows are avoided and a very even light pattern is achieved.

Additional features include an advanced cooling construction, a glare protection system, a seamless dimmer that is operated by an IR-switch, and a built-in timer that automatically turns the lamp off after five hours. Winkel 127 is available with a base, clamp or pin.
