Plastic + Glass = Plass by Luca Nichetto for Foscarini

Plastic + Glass = Plass by Luca Nichetto for Foscarini

Designed by Venetian designer Luca Nichetto, Italian design brand Foscarini’s latest lighting creation combines the essence of Murano glass with the lightness of plastic.

The Plass lamps serve as a reminder of and homage to the Murano glass tradition and the Venetian artisans, reinterpreted through contemporary materials and techniques.

Inspired by Murano glass and made from an innovative polycarbonate mixture, the name, Plass, reflects this fusion of properties. It is the first time that rotationally molded polycarbonate has been used for lighting despite it’s remarkable similarities to glass; the aquamarine and gray diffusers appear brightly coloured when the light is turned off but when lit, they become almost transparent, just like glass.

Its voluminous size and shape, inspired by strings of traditional Venetian pearls, make it ideal for use in open spaces. Plass is currently being featured at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale in a beautiful public installation called Common Ground directed by David Chipperfield. The exhibition runs until November 25, the exhibition aims to explore the architectural function of light.
