Sit a Spell: Perch by Davis Furniture

Sometimes you just need a place to rest. The most natural perch on which to sit is a tree trunk, of course—but how do we translate that into interior design? If you’re the design team at Davis Furniture, you invent a simplified version of such a spot in the form of Perch, a stool that gives people a place to rest a spell without taking up much room.

Because of its size and dimensions, Perch can be moved easily, making space for people to work collaboratively or to converse casually: “Perch moves easily under the counter, into the corner, or along the wall, waiting patiently out of the way until it’s needed again.” Winner of NeoCon Gold 2012, Perch is deceptively simple—and yet, it’s a unique product with multiple applications across different markets.

For schools and universities, Perch is perfect. Young bodies can rest just about anywhere (without needing a chair back or lumbar support). Like little birds, schoolchildren and college coeds require only a small space on which to land. And because Perch is colorful and visually interesting, it can be placed here and there without detracting from the environment. The form is also dynamic: “What appears to be a square-shaped trunk is actually angled ever-so-slightly along each plane.” Perch is particularly suited for math classrooms, where its trapezoidal shape will help students learn their Euclidean geometry.
