A NeoCon 2012 Preview: Portofino Seating Collection by Paul Brayton

Named for a small fishing village on the Italian Riviera, the Portofino seating collection by Paul Brayton Designs is perhaps meant to echo the geographical location of its namesake. The town of Portofino is on the Western edge of Italy’s mainland, tucked within a circular area of the coast. This shape dominates the Portofino collection, from its signature armchair to its footstools and ottomans.

Tuck yourself into the Portofino armchair, and you’ll not want to get out. The semi-circular back wraps around you like a warm wind, nestling you in comfort. The armchair is your very own individual niche—the high back and generous arms ensconce you in ease. And just so you never need to get out, Paul Brayton Designs created accompanying footstools, ottomans, and a tray table that combine with the armchair to create little pods of personal comfort.

Portofino footstools feature a concave side that fits into the convex arc of the armchair’s circular seat. This means you can stretch out and have your entire body—legs, thighs, and torso—supported by the furniture duo. Add a Tambour Tray Table to the footstool, and you’ve got a place to rest your gourmet coffee or fine wine, trashy novel or literary masterpiece. For spaces where you don’t need such sybaritic pleasure, the Portofino armchair can be paired with a circular ottoman instead. In large sizes, these pieces double as coffee tables. The smaller units are little side tables dressed up as poufs. There is also a 22” medium size for all the Goldilocks out there.
