The Piani Light by Ronan and Erwan Bourollec for Flos

The design community around the world is ready and willing to receive the pummeling of information that is mid-April: European show season. Amidst the frenzy of press releases and events, I was impressed by an update from our friends at Flos with regard to three rookie favorites from Euroluce 2011 – the Piani lamp, the MiniKelvin LED, and the Kelvin Floor lamp – that are now available in the U.S.

Modern LED Piani Table Lamp Organizes as it Shines in Four Different Shades

Of the 2011 lamps being released stateside that they referred to, the Piani lamp by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec stood out in its clean form and LED function. While it may be due to the extra space for organization being the dream lamp for a borderline perfectionist, it is also the gracefully low height and the four bold colors that Flos offers which dramatically change the lamp’s effect on a room. “With the introduction of these new pieces in the US, Flos reaffirms its presence as the front-runner in both lighting design and LED technology,” says Jan Vingerhoets, CEO of Flos USA.

Using its flat base and top made of injection printed ABS, the Piani lamp by the Bouroullec brothers uses an LED light source to emit a triangular beam of light that looks like an on-stage spotlight. Both lamps use an optical sensor to switch the lamp on and off and to adjust the beam’s brightness. As Flos says, the table lamp is “a convenient receptacle for pens, coins, paper clips, keys or eyeglasses, Piani is at home on a bedside table or in an office setting.” Known for their polished designs, the Bouroullec Brothers have created an object that is both useful and gorgeous.
