Colorful, Durable Designs of Outdoor Dining Chairs in a Wide Range of Modern Styles
Famous for his use of industrial steel rods with “an airy feel”, Harry Bertoia created the Bertoia Side chair after getting to know Florence and Hans Knoll at the Cranbook Academy of Art. Together, they made the 1952 Bertoia Seating Collection that has become a staple in mid-century furniture design since manufacturing began in Italy over fifty years ago.
A modern streamlined approach to outdoor patio seating, the Wave chair by Brown Jordan is known for its resemblance to an ergonomic task chair and inviting nature. Its perfect proportions and contoured seat is made of extruded aluminum with parabolic mesh and comes in several colors.
Made in Germany by Vitra, the Vegetal chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec is a organic design masterpiece. “Our task as designers is to find new structures and new forms of construction. This chair is not just a motif - it is a structure,” says Ronan Bouroullec of the chair’s plant-like form which is stackable and made for indoor or outdoor use with its polyamide dyed plastic throughout.
With an appealing base that rounds elegantly, the Cielo chair had our attention at first glance. Not only is the woven chair made to match its bistro table, it’s created using high quality Sunbrella outdoor fabrics with a weave that can withstand any climate. In many different colors and configurations, Neoteric Home shines with this example of some of their finest work.
Bright colors set apart the A56 Perforated chair by Xavier Pauchard for Tolixx. Beside the chair’s knack for sturdy transparency with the added challenge of perforation - which might have weakened its overall strength - Tolix created what they call the “classic twist” to the Marais Collection from 1934 in both an indoor and outdoor version, with plentiful options.
In a soft hazelnut and in a nougat color, the Pinn dining chair with arms was created by Lino Codato for LCC Italia. Using a 7 mm (0.27”) thick synthetic wicker, the weave of this thick piece of outdoor seating appears lightweight due to the color and material, but the chromed steel that brings out its classy structure will keep it from blowing over on windy afternoons.
Made from a beech multi-ply that is stained in natural, pearwood or dark brown, the Patio chair by Ligne Roset can also be upholstered in fabric. It’s elegant nature of its silhouette speaks to Ligne Roset’s consistency in creating classy pieces since 1860.
While the Kong chair resembles no part of the Kong doy popular among our furry friends, the hand-polished dining chairs by Philippe Starck for Emeco are worked on for eight hours to get their natural patina perfect. Originally developed for a Chinese restaurant in Paris, they are each made using 24 pieces of aluminum.
In a cut-out back or solid back, the Chair 6 outdoor dining chair by Lebello is a modern chair that uses Sunbrella material with an aluminum frame and a stainless steel sledge base. Suitable for indoors as well as out, the Chair 6 can also come with an optional open weave design, and is perfectly suited for everything from residential breakfast tables to contract projects.
Loud and beautiful, the solid look of the Vignelli chair by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Heller is considered a “classic” by many. With a gently sloping back and molded form, the Vignelli is made using UV- and weather-resistant resin that can be used indoors or outdoors for long-lasting race in the residential to the commercial.
