French Concept Design of the Achille Child’s Bed by Adrien Haas

Since I always got the top bunk, as I was nine minutes older than my identical twin, I really loved our modular set of white, modern bunk beds. As we grew up, she became okay with it since we separated them into their own entities along parallel walls of our room. It was as close as we came to the truly modular bed design that grows up with your child, like the Achille child’s bed by French designer Adrien Haas.

Child-to-Teenager Adaptation in a Growing, Modular Bed by Adrien Haas

Starting out, the concept design of the Achille child’s bed is created for our precious tiny ones beginning at two years of age. It contains a toy box at their feet where the chest’s surface can be used as a flat area for stacking blocks, reading books, drawing and playing games. Additionally, the bed frame itself contains a hollowed out, cave-like area near the top so it feels safe and cozy. Within the headboard’s nook, children can store their favorite stuffed animals and blankets for easy access any time of day or night.

The Achille child’s bed investment only gets better as a child ages. In fact, Adrien Haas recognizes that any big kid would be reluctant to have the identical bed frame as he or she had when they were two years old, so the bed can then morph itself into a highly functioning adult-like single bed. The process is simple: lose the toy box at the foot with the addition of a small, 1.5′ mattress and include slats beneath instead of keeping the built-in storage container. At this point, the mattress grows to its maximum length of 6′ (190 cm) in length instead of the previous 4.5′ (140 cm) length. An added bonus for the older kids is a built-in shelf at the top of the headboard which can serve as a bookshelf or surface for photos, a journal, candles, etc.

While Adrien Haas is just in the Achille child’s bed concept phase currently, on the L’Edito website, prospects look good that the support will be raised to get its design through production. As L’Edito remarks about the Achille bed, “the made-to-measure upgrade is perfectly feasible by eliminating the toy box in order to make a bigger bed, turning it into one that is now 190 cm long. We find the functions and the general look of the bed quite enchanting.” Based on the materials used, the estimated retail price (in the EU, incl. VAT) will be between €750 and €1000.
