Vipp’s New Kitchen Modules Are a Real Revelation

What’s that old saw about the two things most likely to survive a nuclear holocaust? Cockroaches and Twinkies? The draw of the one, of course, being that they’re a handy source of protein, and the attraction of the other that they’re unaccountably delicious (and no need to worry about partially hydrogenated fats post-apocalypse). The good news is that I’m primed to add to this informal list, because Vipp’s new kitchen modules are not only tougher than a cockroach, they’re also able to accommodate about one thousand of those tempting spongy confections within their spacious drawers.

As one reviewer has said, Vipp’s Kitchen Modules offer a “radical re-interpretation of the kitchen.” The company—which built its reputation as the designer and manufacturer of the best performing pedal-operated trash cans in Western civilization, no less—possesses about 75 years of experience processing stainless steel. Thus, says Vipp Chief Designer Morten Bo Jensen, “Vipp’s experience lies within product design focusing on solid materials, mechanics and function.”

Just so, the centerpiece of the Vipp Kitchen is a solid frame of extruded powder coated aluminum “jointed mechanically with CNC-cut corner segments with countersunk pointed screws.” The precision technology accounts for the seamless appearance of the modules, which look as if Batman channeled the aura of van der Rohe in order to devise the ideal indestructible kitchen.

The Vipp Kitchen is indeed a testament to Mies’ contention that form should follow function. The central module incorporates all your culinary dreams (post apocalyptic and otherwise) might desire: a formidably thick (5 mm) stainless steel top, a welded sink with high radius corners, a stainless single level mixer with pull out spray, and a seamlessly integrated combo gas/induction hob with laser engraved heat indicators.

The Vipp Kitchen also offers oversized pantry-style storage with a very slick oven hidden in there among those towering massifs of powder-coated aluminum. Drawer fronts are powder-coated stainless with rubber profiles that assure a firm grip. The Vipp Kitchen is available in white or black—which will you choose if doomsday draws near?

About the Manufacturer: Yes, it’s true what they say. The story of Danish design-build firm Vipp “all begins with a bin.” Taking us back to 1939, the genesis of Vipp is owed to founder Holder Nielsen’s labored efforts to produce—for his wife’s hair salon—the perfect trash can or, as they say on the far side of the Atlantic, “pedal bin.” Nielsen’s design proved iconic, as it has hardly been altered since its original debut. Today, Vipp manufactures more than pedal bins, though each of the company’s comprehensive offerings for kitchen and bath is every bit as pragmatic and aesthetically compelling as the original Vipp bin: “the kinship in the Vipp collection is unmistakable in both the choice of materials and style… the new products are manufactured using the characteristic Vipp materials, steel and rubber, enhancing Vipp’s more than 70-year-old tradition for excellent craftsmanship and durability.”
