In-Flight Enlightenment: The F-Light by Paul Coudamy

More than ever, a noticeable increase in salvaged aircraft parts have been incorporated recently into furniture and lighting design. Perhaps there are an excess of old, grounded airplanes or simply a surge in repurposed materials of the durable caliber, but we are definitely enjoying the results. Take for instance the F-Light project that uses the inner walls and windows of an Airbus 300 by French designer, Paul Coudamy.

Using the discarded windows of an airplane, Coudamy set out to create an innovative ceiling light designed with an air of history. When we realize the places this piece of highly engineered aircraft equipment has gone, the number of miles it has traveled, and the amount of technical research put into coming up with its design in the first place, it’s hard not to think about how its retirement should be equally as rewarding. And what better way than to illuminate a space with it’s twenty or so years of wisdom, wouldn’t you say?

“Its curves, windows and silvery isolation recycle the vocabulary of aeronautics to transform it into an unusual and functional light structure,” writes designer Paul Coudamy of the elegant piece of lighting art he’s created.”These walls are fitted together to create a luminous ceiling forming a shell in levitation. This dome delineates the space and offers a special intimacy beneath it.” Coming in whatever variation you desire – singular or in rows – the windows diffuse the light while the silver accents reflect light for an indirect source of more illumination.

About the Designer: Starting back in 2008, Coudamy Design was founded upon an architecture and design studio vision by Paul Coudamy. Shortly after, his workshop has jumped into designing everything from objects and architectural design to video, set design and styling. While they create based on research and modern innovation, Coudamy Design enjoys pushing the limits with extraordinary pieces of functional art through lighting and hybrid designs.
