Love it To Pieces: Milo Eco Side Table by Tristan Titeux

Tristan Titeux works hard to ensure that his London-based company produces sustainable and healthy furniture. Saddened by having to throw away all the offcuts, Titeux sought to design a piece of furniture that could use waste wood to its advantage. The result is the Re-Cut Series, which recycles “offcuts on their way to the landfill.” The first piece in this series, entitled Milo, pieces together unwanted material, so the waste wood gets “diverted into beautiful modern furniture instead.”

If you want to learn about Titeux’s commitment to sustainability, you can watch his YouTube video, which explains Milo’s design and provides lots of facts about construction waste. His eco-drive led to the development of Milo, a small, square table of “different shapes and sizes collaged together.” On the outside, Milo is finished and smooth, then treated with natural oil. The underside of the table, however, leaves the pieces of waste wood rough and unfinished. Titeux “likes the contrast,” because he wants people “to look at it closely and think about what it has taken to get these materials to us.”

The lines of Milo highlight the process of the table’s construction. They also make a statement, since each piece of offcut wood reminds people of all the different building projects that led to the existence of these pieces. Like a tree’s rings, the lines in Milo document a history. Titeux ensures that in lieu of a history of waste, we receive a history of reinvention.
