Karton’s Creative Cardboard Sitting Collection
It must be the spirit of the season. Just last week, I profiled the exquisite (and dead ringer for finely crafted wood) Cardboard Table by Diseño Cartonero, while today, I have the honor of perusing the wonderful wares offered by Australia’s Karton. Like all their products, the company’s Sitting Line is made of 100% pure, unadulterated cardboard—put to clever, creative, and exceedingly sustainable use.

Karton’s Sitting Line Features Multiple Incarnations of Cardboard Tables and Chairs
As Karton says, this isn’t your grandma’s cardboard. Nor is it your mom’s or even your older brother’s. Not content to follow the rest of the Western World’s trend and simply haul it off to the local processor, Karton manipulates and manufactures the eminently recyclable material into furniture that’s more than ready for prime time.
The Sitting Collection features no less than six different styles of inviting tables. The Chairman’s Table is bench-style seating that also functions as a workspace, or (when two of them are scooted together) as a six-seater dining room table; the Bistro Table is a slim profiled four-seater that evokes al fresco European Cafés; and the Paper Play Set is an especially convenient impromptu (or permanent) play station for kids from 1 to 92.
Other pieces in the Sitting Line include a simple square stool, a hexagonal stool, and a barista-style table that comfortably seats four.
As with all of Karton’s work, the Sitting Line ships as a flatpack. It assembles with an intuitive system of folds and tabs that’s simpler than a pizza box, thus deeding structural strength and a unique aesthetic. But above all, the Sitting Line is green, green, green and as adaptable as a desert fox: “move it, store it, recycle it, or leave it exactly where it is.”
About the Manufacturer: Manufacturer Karton discloses that, in Europe, the term means cardboard, while in Australia, it’s a cue to “forget everything you think you know about cardboard.” With Karton’s guidance, the latter is easily accomplished. The company turns the 100% recycled and recyclable material into chairs, tables, beds, bedside tables, storage units, and even turtles and lambs. The last two signify a clever example of the many forms and shapes to be fashioned from cardboard, but the rest are functional, durable, and attractive furnishings: “an impossibly strong, exceptionally handsome and conveniently cheap way to sleep, sit, store or live.”
