Algorithmically Generated Hyphae Lamps

Using computer simulation based on the work of Adam Runions of the Algorithmic Botany Group at the University of Calgary, the design team at Nervous System created a series of one-of-a-kind lamps modeled after leaf vein formation. These intricately patterned table lamps cast mesmerizing patterns on walls. The lamps themselves resemble the complex iterations of underwater sea sponges, such as the Venus Flower Basket.

Organic Lamps Made From 3D Printing

Manufactured by Selective Laser Sintering, Hyphae Lamps use a 3D printing process that minimizes waste. Each lamp is fabricated on demand, and every one is unique, thanks to the algorithmic formula that generates each design. Just as in nature, where no two leaves have the same vein structure, every Hyphae Lamp develops organically.

These lovely little lamps by Nervous System do indeed feel as fragile as lace. However, thanks to the high-tech 3D process, which is printed by New York City-based Service Shapeways, all Hyphae Lamps are sturdy.

The beauty of these table lamps depends upon their very real connection to nature. Some people may find that they look like seed pods; others will think they resemble brain coral; and still others may find that they call to mind the beautiful drawings of Ernst Haeckel.
