The Bamboo Vessel Sink by Totally Bamboo

Who ever imagined that you could grow your own sink? Tom Sullivan & Joanne Chen of Totally Bamboo, that’s who. The duo was taken with the material several years back when working with it to build custom directors chairs in Hollywood. Since then they’ve parlayed it into several surprising and compelling forms—one of which is the “world’s first” bamboo basin.

The Bamboo Vessel Sink is Elegant and Eco-Friendly

For a quick refresher on this sustainable, durable, versatile, and good-looking material, one needn’t look any further than the Totally Bamboo website, wherein we’re reminded that bamboo “is actually a grass that grows to a harvestable height of 60 feet in about three to five years, growing as much as two feet per day.”

Bamboo is easy to harvest and replenishes rapidly. It’s also durable and quite attractive, especially in the form of this polyurethane-sealed, maintenance free elevated basin. The piece has a timeless look reminiscent of parquet floors. Much like that vintage feature, the contrasting grains and varying shades of the bamboo basin give it a slightly exotic feel, yet it’s versatile enough to work well across a wide range of décor.

The Bamboo Vessel Sink measures in at 17″ diameter and 6″ deep with a 1-3/8″ thickness—space enough to make short work of any daily ablutional ritual with aplomb. At $499, it’s rather affordable considering what you get: a durable workhorse of a sink with an appealing aesthetic and a sustainable pedigree.

About the Manufacturer: After becoming enamored with bamboo as a substitute for the oak in director’s chairs, designers Joan Chen and Tom Sullivan began to concoct all manner of house wares out of this sustainable, renewable, and impressively versatile material. The engineered bamboo products that constitute the Totally Bamboo collection run the gamut, from cutting boards to countertops, backsplashes to sinks.
