Sustainable Children’s Furniture by Castor & Chouca

In a culture where children’s lives are non-toxic, anti-bacterial, and organic, it seems that all the bases have been covered. They ingest only all-natural foods, play with sterilized toys, and wear vegan shoes. Why stop there? French company Castor & Chouca is completing the circle with a line of eco-friendly baby furniture to fit a modern home. Castor & Chouca is a great idea on multiple levels, not only is their furniture sustainable, it is also adaptable to change as the child grows. The collection is fit for children spanning from infant to juniors.

The Mirabelle Junior Bed. Designed by Castor and Chouca.

In a collaborative effort, the collection was created by pediatricians, nurses, mothers and furniture designers resulting in pieces that are simple, easy to use and visually soothing. Castor & Chouca understands that children’s furniture should be built to last as well as expand with the changing needs of a child. Sustainability is not limited to material content, it also references the life span of a piece, which cannot be called sustainable if its usefulness only lasts a few months. By using soft colours and bold, modern shapes, the aesthetic of the furniture is not easily outdated. Bamboo, organic cotton, and linen are some of the sustainable, recyclable materials used in Castor & Chouca’s collection. One example is the 1,2,3 Soleil All in One which changes from a cradle to a bed to a junior’s desk.

We’ve seen sustainable children’s furniture on 3rings before, The Pod Cot by Ubabub is an example with a similar philosophy and aesthetic. Scandinavian Child offers more sustainable children’s choices with less adaptability but a great sense of style. These few examples show how designers all over the world are taking children’s furniture seriously both aesthetically and environmentally.
